Latimer’s Seafood is widely regarded as the best fishmongers in the area, and the best plaice to buy seafood you can find.
We are an independent family run fishmongers that pride ourselves on the quality and freshness of our fish and shellfish.
Robert Latimer (owner) is self taught at the art of fishmongering, he has had a passion for all things fishy since he was a kid – lobstering on the beach right in front of the where his seafood deli is now! His last job before starting his fishmongers in Whitburn was as a lone creel fisherman working off the small Scottish island of Luing.
Robert felt it was such a shame that no one was selling his beautiful crabs, lobsters, langoustines and dive caught scallops in the UK and decided to set up on his own as an independent fishmonger. Using all the contacts and friends he had made through out his career is how he manages to stay one step ahead of his competitors when it comes to getting the best and freshest seafood
into his counter and ultimately into your shopping bag. Day and night he is one the phone to the fishing boats (even before they land the fish!) to find out what they’ve got for his fishmongers. When he meets the boats he “tweets” the pick of the catch – so sign up to follow us on Twitter and you will know what’s the best thing to buy everyday!
Just ask the staff and they will show you how to prepare your seafood how you want it, or do they will do it for you. If you want any recipes or ideas on what to do they give great advice too.
Latimers has won the prestigious BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards for Best Local Retailer.
Latimers has also won Best Independent Seafood Retailer, and has a five star hygiene rating awarded by the Food Standards Agency.
Latimers fishmongers is situated in the small coastal village of Whitburn and overlooks the coast and beaches to the east and parks and fields to the west. We are right on the A183 which runs along the coast between South Shields and Sunderland. We have plenty of free parking for while you are on the premises, and have great access for prams and wheelchairs.
